The Untouchables (1959-1963) The Untouchables (1992-1994) Type: Series Revival | ||
Having just written my page on The Fugitive and its revivals, I am getting a feeling of deja vu. The story on The Untouchables is largely the same. Just like the show The Fugitive, The Untouchables was a series inspired by real life events. It told the story of Federal Agent Eliot Ness and his team of officers who were dubbed The Untouchables and who battled Al Capone and his mob in 1930's Chicago. They were called The Untouchables because to take on Al Capone was to court death. Since they were willing to take such a chance, they clearly must have felt they were supermen who couldn't be harmed - they must have believe they were untouchable. Starring Robert Stack as Ness, The Untouchables was a big hit for ABC. Also like The Fugitive, The Untouchables was reborn as a hit feature film. 1987's The Untouchables was a star studded vehicle directed by Brian DePalma and starring Sean Connery and Robert De Niro among others. And playing Eliot Ness helped make Kevin Costner into an almost immediate star. Make no mistake the film version of The Untouchables kicks major ass. It kicked enough butt that the idea was born to revive The Untouchables as a weekly series. Same thing with The Fugitive. Unfortunately neither revival faired very well. Released into syndication, the series didn't make much of a stir and ended after two seasons. The producers were cool enough though to not leave things hanging and ended the series with Capone being sent away to jail.
