NBC's Law And Order and Homicide: Life On The Street had a long history of crossovers. They would start a story on Law And Order and then finish it up later in the week on Homicide. This went on right up to the end of the 1998-1999 season when Homicide got cancelled, apparently squelching any further activities. Not so fast. Just after Homicide said goodbye to NBC in the spring of 1999, a Law And Order spin off, Law And Order: Special Victims Unit said hello the following fall. Law and Order had a history of replacing cast members on a regular basis. They also had a habit of often bringing those cast members back to play their characters in guest roles. Hell, they even made a TV movie about one (Mike Noth as Detective Mike Logan). Well for the spin off former Law And Order regular Dann Florek was brought back to reprise his role of Captain Donald Cragen. The current cast of Law And Order would also make regular appearances. But most interesting of all, Baltimore Homicide Detective John Munch would move to New York and join the Special Victims Unit as a regular. Talk about weird: a spin off of a show with a lead character coming in from a show other than the parent show. As a side note, Munch is the character that just would not die. He's everywhere. He has now been a regular character on 2 series and has guest starred on another two. If you see in this guide any sort of Homicide (or now any Special Victims Unit) crossovers, its probably because of Munch.
