St. Elsewhere and Homicide were already linked together indirectly through a combination of two weaker crossovers (St. Elsewhere connected to Chicago Hope by a common prop, Chicago Hope connects to Homicide through an unofficial crossover) but they actually ended up having a strong and direct bona fide official crossover as well.
On St. Elsewhere, uber actress Alfre Woodard played Dr. Roxanne Turner. Turner was a caring doctor with a lot of heart who was involved with Dr. Phillip Chandler played by Denzel Washington (Alfre Woodard AND Denzel Washington... was St. Elsewhere a great show or what?).
Years after St. Elsewhere was done and gone, the character of Roxanne Turner showed up on Homicide: Life On The Street. Needless to say with her showing up on a show named Homicide, her patient didn't make it. As a matter of fact Dr. Turner helped her patient not to make it in an episode which tackled a patient's right to die. This was a stunning way to bring back a character people liked - by putting her in the controversial position of being on the wrong side of the law, killing someone for what could be perceived as a noble OR a horrible reason.
