Love! American style! Groovin' on the red white and blue-hoo-hoo! That's right folks. That all American TV classic Happy Days was a spin off of that other TV, uh, classic Love, American Style!

Love, American Style was an anthology series of sorts. Every episode featured a number of self contained stories all about, duh, love in America. One of those segments was called "Love and the Happy Days". It featured a number of actors that would go on to appear in Happy Days playing the same roles they would make famous on that show, including Anson Williams as Potsie Weber and Ron Howard as Ritchie Cunnigham. The only major cast difference was that Ritchie's Dad was not played by Tom Bosley but rather by Harold J. Gould (later to play Rhoda Morgenstern's father on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rhoda). Also different was the local hang out. Instead of Arnold's, Ritchie and Potsie hung out at a very 50's looking Malt Shop. It was really a little too much and well gotten rid of. Not even Fonzie could have looked cool in that place.

This segment of Love, American Style was even used for a flashback scene in one of Happy Day's early episodes. Pretty cool idea. I mean, how many shows in their first season can have a flashback in which the lead actor actually does look younger! Like the flashback was shot waaay in advance of the actual series.
