The Flintstones and The Simpsons

The Flintstones (1960-1966)
The Simpsons (1989-    )
Type: Cursory Cameo

Oh I am pained to include this as any sort of official crossover. It's so on the edge and has the potential to open up a floodgate. I'm not even putting this down on my list of grouped shows because of the confusion it would cause. Allow me to explain.

The Flintstones had not so much a full blown "we share some sort of common reality" crossover but rather a wink wink visual gag get together. As regular viewers know, every week The Simpsons starts with a standard intro sequence that always has some variables. It shoots around the town of Springfield where the show is set showing each of the Simpsons on there way home. Bart is always writing something different a hundred times on the chalkboard, Lisa plays a different saxophone riff and at the end there is always a couch gag. All of the Simpsons run into the living room to sit on the couch and watch TV and something happens. They sit down and there is not enough room so the ends of the couch fall off. The couch folds out into a bed and they lay down. They run in and a huge production number breaks out... on and on and on. Well one of the gags was that the Simpsons run in only to find they've been beaten to the couch by the Flintstones who sit there looking at the bewildered Simpsons like, "Yeah?"

So it really isn't a full fledge crossover. The couch gag means nothing. Its a quick joke. But I know if I don't mention it, some yayhoo... actually tons of yayhoos... will write in telling me I forgot it.

On top of being such a slight bit of business I am also trying to be very careful when it comes to cartoon crossover listings. The Simpsons and The Critic - okay. Both primetime toons and a croosover that got some attention. The Simpsons and The Flintstones, I'll grudgingly go for. But the way a lot of animation houses run crazy with moving characters between shows and reviving old characters in new verisons I could soon be on a slippery slope to madness. Hanna Barbera alone could do me in. Between shows like the Laugh-Olympics where utterly unrelated cartoon characters competed against each other and the Scooby Doo Movies show where Scooby Doo met everyone from Batman and Robin to Josie and The Pussycats... it would be too crazy. And The Superfriends... forget it! Just for the sake of completeness let me point out here that the Flintstones also had a visit froma stone aged Yogi Bear and Boo Boo on their own show. I'm not doing a page for that. Like I said - a slippery slope. So I am going to try and limit myself to only toons big enough that they have had some sort of prime time exposure. So if you want to tell me that Speed Buggy once had a couple scenes with Thundar The Barbarian, please don't bother.

Actually... if that Speed Buggy/Thundar one ever actually happens, do drop me a line. That one I gotta see.
