Hollywood is always trying to revive old shows people loved by bringing them back in some new form. But usually the original series was cancelled because it had grown old and a little stale and so many of the updates don't seem any fresher.
That seems to have been the case with Make Room For Granddaddy, a revival of The Danny Thomas Show which was originally titled Make Room For Daddy. It brought back Danny Thomas's character of Danny Williams along with his wife and his now adult son from the original series. Also on hand were a number of the original shows supporting characters. Danny's daughter Terry and her husband were over overseas due to his military career but they left there son Michael with Granddaddy and company.
So what do we have: a revival of an old show from the 50's and early
60's coming out at the start of the tacky counter culture 70's. And on top of that it's
gimmicky: they write the grandson's folks off so as to get them out while leaving a new
kid in the house for Granddad to play off of and so that they can use the title Make Room
For GRANDdaddy. It was the wrong show for the wrong year and maybe not done to par with
the level of excellence set by the original. Not to utterly snub Granddaddy. The
original show set that bar pretty high and the spin off had a lot of obstabcles to
overcome.
