All In The Family (1971-1979) Maude (1972-1978) Type: Spin Off Group: 1 | ||
Maude was a spin off of All In The Family. Maude was the cousin of All In The Families Edith Bunker. She started there as a recurring character designed as an antagonist and almost exact opposite of Archie Bunker. She made her debut in an episode where all in the family, as it were, were sick. Maude showed up to take care of them and the fireworks started. While Archie Bunker was conservative to the point of biggotry, Maude was liberal to... well to the point of being shocking to the other extreme. While Archie Bunker was yelling about blacks and hispanics, Maude was shocking viewers by having an abortion. Major issues aside, the main thing that makes Maude hard for me to watch is the way it wallowed in the styles of the seventies. Maude's house, the characters' clothing... all just visually too much for my system to take. The Bunker's house might have been a bit run down but at least it doesn't make you think you're on a bad acid trip.
